The hour-long “MythBusters” is one of the most success American science television programs on the “Discovery Channel.” One reason for this success is the abundant program contents of “MythBusters.” Also, “MythBusters” has succeeded because of the hosts, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, whose experiments and humor contribute to this program’s performance, is the final view. These two factors are the main keys to the success of “MythBusters.”
The reason that “MythBusters”’s success is the popularity. “MythBusters” is a reality science television documentary program. The television producer Peter Rees commended The “MythBusters” to the “Discovery Channel” in the 2002. Then, the “Discovery Channel” decided to preview three episodes of the “MythBusters” in their television program. That was the first time the “MythBusters” present on the television. After showing on the “Discovery Channel”, the “MythBusters” become famous in the U.S. In addition, due to “MythBusters” is a success science Program, the hosts of “MythBusters” started appearing on the magazine cover and television shows such as Good Morning American (2004), The Late Show with David Letterman (2005), Skeptic (2005). Because “MythBusters” had many contribution of science, the hosts of “MythBusters” were invited speak at the annual convention of the National Science Teachers Association (2006). Also, the hosts of “MythBusters” were named honorary lifetime members by the California Science Teachers Association (2006). In 2007, “MythBusters” has already produced 70 episodes around the world by showing on the “Discovery Channel.” As a result, the combination of those appearances in many magazines and television shows make “MythBusters” success.
The first factor which made the program success is “MythBusters” has abundant program contents. Usually, the hour-long “MythBusters” uses varies experimental research to find the answer of two or three questionable and funny topics such as some urban legends, popular beliefs, or Internet rumors like “Can a rotating ceiling fan cut a person’s head?” and “Is it possible to break off a lock by shooting it with a gun?” In addition, usually, “MythBusters” uses many objects to test the myths such as ballistics gel, high speed cameras, cars, polycarbonate sheets, firearms and explosives. Those objects were produced the most dramatic results possible to attract audience such as explosions, fires or vehicle crashes. Sometimes, if the myth isn’t too hazardous, the hosts of “MythBusters” put themselves in the test. It made the test more funny and interesting. Moreover, by the end of each episode, “MythBusters” will give each myth a definition such as “Buster” which means the myth results can only be produced by special situation and its validity is questionable, “Plausible” which means the myth results is possible but unlikely, or “Confirmed” which means the myth results is actually occurred. Thus, those program contents make “MythBusters” success.
The second factor that made the MythBusters success is the experiments and humor of the hosts, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. Adam Savage is a model making artisan in special effect. Before becoming a TV host, he worked at such films as the famous movie Star Wars episodes I and II, The Matrix sequels, and others. On “MythBusters”, Adam is always doing silly things and juvenile behaviors to make people interesting in watching “MythBusters.” Jamie Hyneman, who has special style, is a special effect expert and a special effect workshop owner. He has some notable achievements such as the Can-spitting soda machine form the 7 Up commercials, and the two-wheeled football shoe from Nike Lab commercials. On “MythBusters”, Jamie always appears with austerely countenance, dark beret and white lab shirt, which never seem to get dirty. Adam and Jamie test the myth as if they were working on the special effect. They use their special effect skill and expertise to test the myth which many people are interesting in. If the myth is not too danger, they were putting themselves into the test to make the test more authentic. Sometimes, that manner made the episode as if they were made the episode of Jackass. Because of the funny experiments and the hosts’ spirit to seek truth from facts, “MythBusters” won great affections from audience.
The abundant program contents and the experiments and humor of the hosts in “MythBusters” are the reasons why it becomes one of the most popular television programs. This program already has more than 30 country versions and 10 different language versions which were played on Discovery channel all over the world. In 2007, “MythBusters” has already had two new episodes, which are “Hindenburg Mystery, Crocodile Zig Zags” and “Underwater Car,” and one after another, “MythBusters” will continue to test the myth which many people are interesting in.
