There are four typical types of after-sale service database management systems. The first type of after-sale service database management system is Relational Database Management System. Relational Database Management System always uses simple database systems, such as Microsoft Access, to handle after-sale service information. In addition, Relational Database Management System is also the most common after-sale service database management system. The second type of after-sale service database management system is Network Database Management System. Network Database Management System is always a specific system which was designed by other companies. For example, Taichung Machine, the most famous machine tool company in Taiwan, adopted the BOM system, and this system is a kind of Network Database Management System. Furthermore, Ultro Technology designed the BOM system, and this system is only used in the field of machine tools. However, Network Database Management System is usually so expensive that only big companies adopt it. The third type of after-sale service database management system is Hierarchical Database Management System. This kind of system does not need powerful programs, and it is economical. Because Hierarchical Database Management System is hard for management to handle a great amount of information, this system is only used by small enterprises. The last type of after-sale service database management system is Object-Oriented Database Management System. This system is a very complicated system which combines all the other types of after-sale service database management system. Because Object-Oriented Database Management System has just been developed for five years, only few companies adopted this kind of system.

Database management system also responses to transfer information between Business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), consumer-to-consumer (C2C), consumer-to-government (C2G), business-to-government (B2G), and government-to-government (G2G). To achieve a successful electronic commerce business, it is important to be aware of the functions of a database management system, software techniques which applied on the construction of an electronic commerce business, and future prospects.
